Just say "no" to government sponsored charity?

Claim
- Government involvement in charity breeds apathy in Jesus' followers.
Premises
- Charity is a cornerstone of following Jesus; and it is clear that charity is a key evidence why Jesus' way is better than the world's; but more importantly, charity is a key ingredient to spiritual growth. Hence, "it is more blessed to give, than to receive." See Acts 20:35.
- Jesus' followers' involvement in charity is inversely proportional to government's involvement in charity. (I think this is due to a misperception among the Jesus' followers, that humanitarian needs are already being met.)
Problem
- Our apathy today is at least partly due to US government involvement in charity. What can we do about it?

We must remember what government is, the power to compel, with threat of violence with impunity. And that it is never charity to compel one person to give to another.

Wow, good point.
