Another "Some Thoughts'

I'm having a hard time keeping up with anything right now!  LOL  Let me make sure first I understand the difference between a blog and a forum.  It would seem that forums are more like conversations and discussions.  So then it would seem that blogs are just like diary entries in a way.  You might put something out there that happened to you, or some update to let family and friends know what is going on with you, or info about new music you have discovered, etc.  Is that pretty much the distinction between the two?  Because it seems that sometimes a blog entry starts out to be just a persons opinion or feeling about something and the next thing you know it is a huge success in that it is getting comments back and forth (which is good).  An example is Ron's blog about the inauguration.   A forum on the other hand starts out as a kind of structured thing:  Let's discuss this.  Anyway, I think you should take all the suggestions before actually making any changes (kind of do your systems analysis before changing the code).  Although there is a lot to be said for prototyping too.  But looking at things now I would prefer to go back to the original page!  LOL  But I am in that category of 'teaching an old dog new tricks'.!!  Just some thoughts.

I think I agree with Aunt Judy about the blog/forum thing.   It's not a problem if a blog generates discussion.  It's good to have both.  Creating a forum topic is like asking people to comment.   I feel like there has to be another way to handle the "political" stuff.

Forums are for discussion, blogs are for personal musings.  If a blog spawns lots of conversation, this is good, but we'll move the discussion to the forums with a link from the blog.  Does this work for folks?

I don't like the idea of always moving blog discussions to the forums.   I think we're going a bit overboard on this.   If a blog spawns discussion let's leave it be.  Basically what you would be doing is moving all comments of any nature off the main page.

Not quite that aggresively, but yes.  I also envision moving blogs off the main page as well.  I think the main page should present what we are in a simple and attractive way.  Regular NLD members could have a different landing page to catch up on all the latest activity -- perhaps once they've logged in.

I'm still thinking about site design and will present it here before I make any major changes.  I agree that the way things are right now is less than ideal.  If folks want all content and comments back on the main page, until we have something better to offer, we can do that.  The results of this poll will help me decide if this is what we want.
