Save the Children and other thoughts

Isn't it funny how you can have something hit you out of the blue?  Last night my husband and I attended an annual open house holiday party given by my son's previous basketball coach and his wife.  While there I happened to strike up a conversation with a lady who is part owner and/or instructor in a store called Knitting Sisters.  I told her since I have retired I have bee

New book: Mountains Beyond Mountains

I just started reading a new book.  It is about an American doctor who spends most of his time in Haiti.  So far it is fascinating.  I will post more after I have finished the book.  Has anyone else read this book?  It is by Tracy Kidder.  We just put up our tree and then turned off all the lights except those tiny lights on the tree and just sat and listened to Ch

Some quotes from Imperial Hubris

This is an amazing book.  It is written by Michael Scheur.  Near the end of the book he poses some questions needing debate.  I may not be smart enough to debate some of his ideas but a lot of what he says makes sense.  And I don't necessarily agree with everything he says.  So these are just food for thought.  Here they are (but not in their entirety):

Add another one to the Failure Factory

I read on Al Jazeera that Hillary Clinton is accepting Obama's offier of Secretary of State.  I could not be much more disappointed.  Looks like just another beaurocrat being moved around.  And the State Department is one of the areas we need to get some really knowledgeable folks back into.  This, to me, is really bad news.  So much for change!

Touch the Earth

Many years ago I found a book titled Touch the Earth (A Self-Portrait of Indian Existence).  I was really touched by the writings in this book.  And I want to share with you an excerpt from this book.  This is not to spark a discussion of right/wrong, red/white, pagan or not.  It is just to share some simple, spiritual writings.  I was so touched by this book and

What a glorious Day!

What a glorious day!  My children will be home for Thanksgiving, I have recuperated from my surgeries, I walked 2.5 miles today and it was absolutely beautiful.  The trees are brilliant yellows, red, oranges!  I feel so blessed!  I am looking forward to the holidays and spending quality family time together.  What more could a person ask for?  I had an email from m

Dealing with Neighbor's Death

Our neighbor, Jack,  is dying of lung cancer.  We went to visit him today and take some food.  That is one of the hardest things to do.  What do you say?  It would seem that if you were dying then trivial conversation would drive you crazy.  But yet it gives a bit of normalcy to what is going on.  This man has been retired for several years and has taken cruis

No Doom's Day stuff

Things are bad, no doubt.  But I am optimistic!  Tho I am not sure why.

I just feel so frustrated because our representatives don't seem to get it; and our 'leaders' have no talent for diplomacy, statesmanship, or any real knowledge of world affairs!  How did we get in this mess?
